Hi Everyone,
First of all I would like to thank Maggie Lilith and all the other organisers of the GM rally held on Wednesday 18th November. It is hard work to put on anything let alone a rally. These people do a lot of hard work that goes unnoticed and at times very unrewarding. Thanks to all of you, you all do a fantastic job and are very much appreciated.
I would like to also commend Emily and her family at Highvale Orchards, who put on the Biodynamic Festival last Sunday 22nd November. What a great day, and such a lot of people attended. I even had great pleasure in meeting some of our members from the Gwelup and Fremantle local groups who saw the OGAWA banner on display.
Lastly, the committee and I would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Have a safe one and I hope to catch up with you all next year.

NOTICE OF SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING
The OGAWA Committee is calling a “Special General Meeting” at City Farm, 1 City Farm Place, East Perth, on Saturday 23rd January, 2010 at 12.30pm.
At the meeting a Special Resolution will be proposed to change the name of the association to: Organic Association of W.A. Inc
The Committee has for a long time recognised that the current name does not fully represent all people with an interest in organic food production and consumption. Feedback from members has also suggested this is the case. The association represents, organic growers, retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers, consumers and gardeners, biodynamic producers, consumers and retailers. We feel that the new name will be a positive move to represent all those with an interest in the importance of promoting and consuming organic foods.
(We have thoroughly researched a number of alternative names and some suggested names are already currently in use by other organisations in Australia)
All members will be sent an official email, with full details late December or early January, asking for you to attend to ensure we have a quorum.

Hi Fremantle Growers,
Our November meeting was a great talk by Harry Mazza from Wandilla
Garden and Gifts. Harry talked about the many ways for
caring for your fruit trees over summer. Some interesting
points he discussed included;
- Wind is the most damaging of all the elements. Keep
young fruit trees protected from the wind – hessian bags
provide a good wind break.
- When netting trees use white netting. Birds cannot
see black netting and so can get tangled in it.
- Cover juvenile fruit trees with shade cloth in summer – until
the roots develop (2-3 years).
- Sheep and poultry manure is very acidic, therefore they are
not good to be used alone as mulch. If used, they should
always be composted first.
The following table is a tentative list for the Fremantle meetings
for 2010. It is subject to availability and may change,
however it is a good rough guide.

Hi Everyone
Our November meeting was held at Tom and Margaret's beautiful
garden. Wow, what a wonderful array of colours and clever
use of recycled materials. Pipes have been painted for
use as colourful pot stands, pieces of trench mesh support climbers
and even a bird cage houses a fuchsia. The plants are healthy
and well cared for with tomatoes, carrots, bananas and a grafted
mango to name just a few. Some topics discussed today were
how to treat dieback, figs (they don't need pollination
as the fruit is the flower), natural pest control
(fruit fly and cabbage whites always get a mention!) and the up-coming
protest at Parliament House against GM foods. Most of
us will be attending the Biodynamic Festival at Highvale Orchard
on Sunday 22nd November.
For details on our next meeting please give John a call on 0413

Cheers 'til next time…

Message from Ralph Darlington |

Hi everyone,
Firstly, congratulations to Maggie and Janet for a great result
at Parliament House The speakers were good, the
inclusion of our farming friends to address their concerns to
the meeting was great. Thank you Maggie, Janet and helpers,
without you the push for a GE free WA would not have happened. It's
up to us now, to contact our 'Pollies' and tell them
how we want them to vote on the moratorium issue.
Great rain and weather for our gardens this week! Not
so good for our Farming friends. Let's hope that
the wet weather doesn't cause them too many problems.
Our meeting last week was about saving seed from our gardens. It's
become an issue now that Monsanto is buying up all the seed companies
it can get. We have a range of smaller seed companies
in Australia that save and distribute open pollinated and Heritage
seed. Our hope for our gardens lies with them, but saving
your own seed is fun and allows you to grow plants that have
been acclimatised to your growing conditions. Here in the
Perth environs, we have the most difficult of growing conditions
in Australia. Hot, dry and no soil, just sand, rocks or
clay. Seeds and plants that come from 'the east' and
from overseas always seem to struggle, but talking from experience,
seed that you have saved from your garden over a few years do
really well. They germinate quickly and handle the heat
much better that the others'. Just be very
particular about choosing the plant that you are saving from,
and that it hasn't been cross pollinated from some other
unwanted plant.
One of the best books to get hold of on this subject is: The
Seed Savers Handbook by Michel and Jude Fanton.
Our next meeting on 8th Dec, is our Xmas meeting, apart from
the ‘nosh', we will be discussing the programme for
the coming year.
Our members don't want to stop in January, our meeting
is on the 12th Jan 2010. Our member Robyn Everist is going
to speak. Topic is: Chooks in the Organic
Garden, Feathered pigs, or Bountiful Goddesses.
May you all have a great Xmas and a prosperous and Bountiful
New Year.

Mango Pruning
|
|
 |
Message from Tan Fowler |
 |
|
What a good turn out! There
were a few new people so we spent a bit of time getting to know
each other. It was decided that from the first meeting next year
a small charge would apply for anyone attending the meeting who
is not a member of OGAWA. This way we can raise funds to use
towards guest speakers and events.
Jason then got the pruners and chainsaw out and demonstrated pruning techniques
on a mango tree. As soon as the mangoes have been picked is a good time to prune.
This encourages more fruit in the following season. It's also a good time
for compost making so don't let those prunings go to waste!
There is no meeting in December. Meetings will start again on the 16th of January
and below is a list of topics for most of the year; We meet the third Saturday
of the Month 3.30pm at 12 Mile Café.
January- Compost
February- no dig gardens
March- Raising seedlings
April- Maintenance of irrigation system, discussion on types of reticulation
May- Pest Control
June- Garden Visit
July- Soil analysis and telltale signs in your plants
August- Garden Visit
September- Seed Collecting
October- Tropical fruit

| Fresh Report by Lyndon from Organic on Charles |
Summer fruit
is now in full swing with tasty peaches and nectarines in good
supply. The last week has also seen the first apricots and cherries
arriving on the shelves. There's also really
sweet pineapples from Queensland coming across and strawberries
from Albany are in excellent supply, so fruit salads are starting
to look like the gourmet fare that us organic officianados are
used to. Capsicums are still nowhere to be found, but the local
zucchini is looking fantastic now as are the lettuce, spinach
and chards. Last, but certainly not least, the staple onion,
which was in sorry, short supply last month has kicked into its
new season, with brown, red and white varieties all now available.
Enjoy!
Regards,
Lyndon

Josh Byrne Recognised With Prestigious National Horticultural Media Award
Josh Byrne, WA's Presenter and Writer for ABC Gardening Australia, was awarded the prestigious 2009 Horticultural Media Association (HMA) Television Laurel Environmental category for outstanding achievement in communicating through a television programme, segment or series, at the Botanic Gardens in Adelaide on Thursday 29 October. These 'Laurels' recognise the best performers of Australian Television, Radio, Print and Information Technology in the Horticultural Media over the past two years.
Josh's entry “Creating a School Garden” featured on ABC Gardening Australia's Favourite Gardens DVD and was released earlier this year. The 6-part series showed Josh designing and constructing a productive, educational garden and wetland from scratch. Working with students, parents and teachers at SVACS, a school community in Perth's Swan Valley, a wonderful space for learning and growing was created over an 11 month period.
“I am really pleased to receive this recognition from industry peers and grateful for the opportunity to help inspire our schools and communities create productive gardens. Gardening is now being seen as more than just a hobby, it's also being valued as a way to help young people establish a deep respect for the environment”, Josh said.
Josh has previously been awarded the HMAA Television Laurel in 2007 for his Permaculture and Organic Gardening DVD (ABC TV) and the HMAA Anita Boucher Young Achiever's Award in 2006.
“How we design and manage our gardens can make a major contribution to improving the sustainability of our homes, suburbs and cities. We can address pressing environmental challenges whilst still creating beautiful and productive landscapes”, said Josh.

| Network of Consumers for GM Free Food |
Hi everyone,
November 18ths “Myths and Fairy Tales” Rally at Parliament was a
great success. We were surprised by the number and we hope that you were
heartened by the various speeches.
Maggie Lilith presented a break-down of the recent review of the moratorium on
GM. The results are that 89% of the 424 submissions request that the moratorium
be retained and even strengthened. The opposition (35 submissions) came from
the usual suspects such as Monsanto, AgriFood Awareness and Bayer, and some large
agricultural associations. It will be hard to see how the government can turn
these figures to their advantage.
Janette Liddelow and Jo Fowler, canola farmers
from Williams, spoke of their concerns regarding contamination
and loss of livelihood. Janette's speech was particularly
heartfelt, as she implored Minister Terry Redman (who was present
throughout the Rally) for answers as to who will be responsible
for loss of markets once GM contamination becomes widespread.
The minister's speech was met with heckling, and he had
nothing new to tell us and suggested that people should voice
their concerns to him, which is exactly what we have been doing!
|
Photos: Conservation Council
|
|
My speech was to inform everyone that this year we have seen
seed companies reject GM canola in the Eastern States, and a
massive movement of food producers in demanding GM free canola
for their food production. International markets already prefer
GM free canola, as well as a growing demand from consumers for
the right to know whether their foods contain GM ingredients.
Mick Murray, shadow Agriculture Minister, confirmed Labor's
commitment to keeping WA GM free, and this was enforced by Greens
Lynn MacLaren who encouraged all present to keep up the pressure,
as they will in parliament.
Bee Winfield has been collecting signatures from organic growers,
who have signed up to a letter to Terry Redman voicing concerns
over loss of accreditation from contamination from GM crops. The
letter warns…
“In the event of a loss of accreditation, I along with all other
farmers and organic retailers will have little choice but to commence legal
action against the department and government for the loss of our certification,
markets and income.”
I was delighted to present the letter, containing 34 signatures,
to the minister, and I hear that Bee has since increased that
to 43. If you have not signed this letter yet please contact
Bee at beewinfield@westnet.com.au
On Friday the Network's Margaret River branch held a demonstration
outside Australis where Premier Colin Barnett was attending an
event. Sally Wylie says
“Barnett spoke to us, which we appreciated, but he appears to know very
little about the subject. He continues the only argument they think will appeal
which is feeding the hungry - in particular India.
We received massive support from the passing motorists - lots
of hooting and waving. - and it didn't rain.” All great
work by the group in MR.
The deadline for the federal food labelling review closed on
Friday 20th November, so I hope that you were able to meet the
deadline.
All of these events add up in the end, and if each of us
makes that extra effort to keep up the pressure, whether it be
writing letters to the papers, to local members, or phoning GM
free food producers to thank them for their support, we will
keep our hopes of maintaining a GM Free WA, and that has to be
worth it.
Cheers, Janet
